Engine bolt replacement



Just to confirm some of the comments that have been raised on the issue of
engine bolts.

Triumph does regular audits on all aspects of the bikes including the torque
of engine bolts after the unit has been manufactured. On one of these audits
it was found that the torque setting was relaxing (Loosening) on the lower
crankcase bolts, this was on investigation of more machines the torque
figure varied slightly on about 5% of the machines. This was thought to be
down to tool used on the track giving an intermittent figure (Although all
tool torque settings are checked daily). Immediately a service bulletin was
sent to all dealer informing them to retorque the bolts to the correct
figure on service or if the bike was in for any other work.

Further test at the factory showed that the tool was not at fault and that
the problem was that the bolt supplier had changed the plating on the bolt
without informing Triumph and the bolt was in fact out of specification. For
want of a better description the plating was similar to a Teflon coating
that allowed some of the bolts to relax it's torque setting after some hours
(Hence the varying figures measured). Triumph have tracked down the last
engine that was fitted with these bolts and has found the earliest engine we
have not to have this spec bolts fitted.
A recall has now been issued between the Vin No.s 076,793 - 084,542 (Last 6
digits of your chassis No.), to have the bolts replaced with the correct
specification, not all bikes will be affected in this range and the majority
of bikes will be fine.
The worse symptom if the bolts relax will be an oil weep from the bolt head.

Recall notices have gone to all distributors and dealers, customers on
Triumph's database will be contacted by letter in the next few weeks as they
will have to go through their relevant countries transport bodies, so if
your bikes in the affected range then contact your dealer and get them
replaced, the job on an ST will taken around 2 hours.

I hope this clears up any confusion on the issue.
