I think everyone has an opinion on the correct way to maintain the chain.
"My" opinion is that the "O"ring keeps lubricant inside, once it's gone the
chain is on borrowed time. I think anything that attracts and holds dust
will help destroy the "O"ring; Thus my method which is clean on a regular
basis with WD40, wipe down with a dry cloth. I guess time will tell if that
works or not, and since I probably view the chain/sprockets as expendable
items much as the tires I'm probably happier having less mess in the chain
area even if I do take a slight hit mileage wise. My Bandit chain and
sprockets have 11,000 miles on them using this method and are doing fine. I
think the main thing is to find a method that keeps you happy. If you really
feel like you should get 40,000 miles out of a set of sprockets/chain, I'm
not sure my method is the best.
