yes - it is of some concern
no - I did not make a new cover
I plan on monitoring the amount of captured debris and then deal with it at 
that point (fabricating a cover if so required). Right now it looks like a 
little WD40 will do the trick on occasion.

Make sure that the bake plate has been slightly spread away from the lock. 
Kyle Rocke did a nice picture of it. Go to the accessories section of the 
site, click on the "2 Box pannier" link and then click on the "having 
problems with your lock?" link. Expand the picture and it will be very clear.
