heated grips switch

Could someone who has the heated grips installed tell me if there
really is a difference between the "start" and "run" positions of
the switch?  

According to the documentation that came with the grips, start
is "hot" and run is "warm".  However, when I check the switch
wiring with a voltage tester, the brown (start) and pink (run) wires
are connected.  This is consistent with the connector: the brown and
pink wires both run into the one side of an apparently two-pronged
female plug.  Since the male side of this plug has only two wires
coming out, I'm pretty confident that there should be only two
settings for the grips: on and off. 

Anyone?
