Jonathan,
As you say, the cosmetics are purely a personal preference. I ran a
Renntec rack on my bandit for two years with a 45 litre Givi box
without problems. This included several two up fully loaded touring
jaunts and I never had a problem with the rack. I even dropped the
bike (while pushing it) in a narrow alley-way once :( and the rack
caught against the wall holding the bike upright. The damage? a small
scuff in the black plastic coating of the rack! :)
I intend using this same box on the ST for long trips and unbolting
the rack and box for everyday use.
Since each Renntec rack is individually tailored to a particular model
it would make sense that each rack would have different strength
characteristics. I wouldn't have thought twice about buying another
rack from them but now I guess I'll have to see the finished product
before making judgement.
What happened to your friends luggage? Sounds like there may be a
funny story in there somewhere.
Martin

Just to give another view, I had a Renntec unit on my T509; the black tubular
construction looked cheap and the fixings to the rear subframe had to be bent to
fit, and used up all the underseat space (filled with brackets and inaccessible
nuts). I would say it looked alot worse than the rather neat Triumph grabrail
or rack unit, and it was rated to a load of only 2.5kg - which sounds about
right before it would bend! The cost (from Jack Lilley) was about £45, while
the standard rack here in Germany is about DM200 (£60).
I guess its down to a matter of personal preference for looks, but in terms of
usuable load carrying there is no dispute!!! The Triumph unit can take a
fully-loaded 45 litre Givi box (weight >20kg) without serious problem. Try that
on a Renntec and you will need a new Givi box (and possibly subframe!).... a
friend tried it :(
cheers
Jonathan
