The pipe is dead

The pipe is (nearly) dead, long live the pipe!

I had opted for the lovely carbon fiber can and had one installed about
two months back. Last Sunday night I narrowly escaped a fast trip to
the pavement when one of those four-wheeled things changed lanes on top
of me (without looking, natch) and glanced off my muffler. The pipe
took the brunt of the impact and the pillion step snapped where it
mounts to the frame up underneath the seat. Since the can absorbed most
of the impact by caving in on itself, I was able to keep the bike
upright and did not go down.

The pillion step is a $60 part, so I wasn't devasted by that, but it
looks like the carbon can won't survive. It is currently scheduled for
surgery, but the doc says the prognosis is not good. The pipe has
probably sacrificed it's too-young life so that the rest of my bike
could continue unscathed. In honor of this selfless act, I ask you all
to make a small prayer for this noble part in hopes that it survives the
operation. A specialist is flying in from Italy (okay, the mechanic is
on vacation), so it will be another week before the can goes under the
knife. I will be sure to let you know what happens.
