I checked the pressures very carefully (stone cold) that day so I dont
think that was the problem.    Is this something likely to happen to any
bike tire used for extended periods at 115mph+ ?

the heat cycles are what kill them so extended time at higher speeds would
give you a hotter tire. Tires with a more touring style will hold up better
than the softer sport tires.
