Well, the comment got me thinking, so I performed a little experiment. I
brought my 9 year old daughter into the garage and showed her a record and
asked her what it was. Looking at the cover, she had no idea, but when I
produced the record, she said "thats a record thingy". Very good - but how
did you know that I asked her ? "Oh, I've seen those at Grandma's...."  Do
you know how it works? "You put it in a big CD player with no top and watch
it spin round and round". How do you hear the music? "There is a laser
beam..."
