To maintain the "mirror" finish, they need a sealer and periodic work. I do
not recommend clear coating as if the clear is pitted, the metal will dull
under the clear in the general area of the damage and then the clear must
be removed to clean the part. There is a company in Daytona that is now
doing a clear powder coat that is extremely durable and if not for the
expense, I would get parts done with this. I used them to clear some Ness
cable clamps on my last Harley - saw the bike a few weeks ago and the
clamps still looked like they were just out of the package. 

I instead used a product called "X-Treem" It comes in a kit with
impregnated cotton that is used to clean or give that high luster shine and
a bottle of a protective sealer that protects the piece for several months.
Then I can hit it with the dremel to touch it up and re coat it if needed.
