Yep, it varies greatly. If you're the only vehicle on the road and the
officer is using a modern radar gun, I'd guess nearly a 1/2-mile range.
The bigger problem, as you alluded to, is that a typical radar beam fans
out pretty quickly and makes it difficult to pick a single vehicle out
of a pack. That's why officers wait until you're pretty close (1/8th of
a mile) before zapping you.
