Nominal distance for a lidar equipment(LIght And Distance Ranging) is from 
1000 to 2000 feet.
For "same lane" detection, there is a direction sensing radar which can 
ignore vehicles going in a particular direction. You CAN be detected from 
group of vehicles.
Most radars have a range up to approx 200mph.
If in doubt just remember "Bike fall over if they don't go fast."

Yes, cops in Australia can do have detector detectors! Check out 
www.radarradar.com.au. They have a Bel 980 especially for Aust/NZ which uses 
something called "Shadow Technology II". It is apparently undetectable by 
the interceptor VG-2 or any radar detector.
