radar....say on a clear day. It may vary by type of radar or laser and brand
and atmospheric conditions, but this morning (in my cage) I was going down a
three lane freeway limited to 45 mph. I was in the left hand lane (as my
speedometers always seem to have a Class 'A' personality), and my detector
started to give signs of a "stop & rob mobster". As I was just clearing the
crest of the overpass, he was visible, straight shot clear view, maybe an
eighth of a mile away. Luckily I took heed to the detector's warnings, and
other motorists brakelights, and the fact that this construction zone is
their little gold mine. I was slowed down to 45 shortly after gaining a
visual. If line of sight was good enough for the officer to get a "clock" on
me, I would have been in trouble. However, the detector gave off relatively
weak warnings!
until I was about a hundred and fifty feet away from the patrol car, where
it went crazy. This leads me to the question of the effective range of these
radars. There was traffic behind me and to my right, so the uncertainty of
"Who was speeding" might have saved me, that is if he was able to read my
speed from about an eighth of a mile away??...or maybe he didn't want to
fight through the thick slug of traffic that would have been between him and
me if he were to persue me, or perhapse he was looking for a greater
offender.

Your are right-by not telling us what kind of detector you were using, your
question becomes "how long is a piece of string?" Was it a Valentine? They
are the best.
