Jeff,
Without a hugger, the rear tire has an opportunity to throw a lot of debris
up around your alternator. The alternator case is an open design, so said
debris can get right to the wiring/armature. The problem may be a little
difficult to see unless the tank is off. I hadn't thought much about the
subject until my mechanic pointed the area out and suggested I think about
installing a hugger over the winter.
Didn't take much thinking since I could see a fair bit of sand and dirt in
the area. Gets my vote for functional.
