Re: Autocom/J&M

Richard and Lisa -

First on the couple's complaint of the Collett having interference at close
range, they are correct (as the company will warn as well). The units are
designed for maximum transmission distance. As with most two way radios
they are designed to be used out of earshot, not standing side by side. The
only time I have experienced this noise however is directly side by side.
When riding staggered I have not had the problem.

Now onto the CB / FRS - GMRS area.

CB (or as it is known in professional circles "Children's Band") is really
a poor choice for communications. It operates on a frequency of 26-27MHz
and is subject to a number of interferences - and with the "skip" you can
sometimes find yourself taking to someone 20 miles away while unable to
talk to someone two miles down the road...... Also, because of the general
cost of the units and lack of licensing the band has become overrun with
garbage transmissions (lots of teens and idiots).

FRS operates on the UHF band in the 462 MHz band (very similar to what
police departments used to use - many now use 800 MHz transmitters now). At
.5 (1/2) watts of output power, it has an effective transmission distance
of 1 to 2 miles. The quality of the radio signal is far superior to that of
the CB. Plus, the FRS will operate without the aid of any external antennas
whereas you will need something with CB (every seen those sticks on
Goldwings ? Not a good look for the ST...)

I would go for the FRS radios...
