Brake master cylinder with bigger piston

I'm on a quest to improve the front brake feel of my ST.  I tried running
two stainless steel lines straight from the master cylinder to each caliper
rather than looping from one caliper to the other, but that really didn't
change anything.  

I remember some discussion about fitting the brake lever/master cylinder
assembly from another bike.  What was the recommendation?  Has anyone
successfully done this?
