A prime example of this can be seen by looking at some of the results so 
far in the tire (tyre) survey.

Dennis only got 3700 miles to the threads of the tire but spent a long 
stretch running at 120mph. Most everyone else is getting between 5,000 to 
7,000 miles with Charlie coming in on top with more than 10,000 miles!

No - there are several that are silica implanted so that they can run a 
stickier compound but still get good mileage.

According to the Bridgestone website, their rubber can be changed from a 
harder to softer compound with having to put it on in wear sections. This 
allows a gradual softening of the rubber the further you get from the center.
