This is the law in Germany and Austria, I don't know about other countries,
but:
Two close-together headlights can be mistaken for a car that is further away
, thus inticing people to pull out in front of what they think is a far away
car, but is in fact a bike really close....[that would be a car with 3-foot
wide headlights, six inces apart, and 10 feet off the ground...]
Also, the three light setup of the Trumpets could also be mistaken for a
train coming towards you [what's that train doing on the road ?]
This is the official explanation given when I asked a policeman, my
insurance agent and the dealers - only the dealer smiled while he explained
it, then promptly told me he'd connected the lights to come on together
during that service.
