Re: Centerstand Dynamics 101

Neil.
meant to revert to this centrestand business.
I know friends with tall, slimline bikes (Dominators etc.) who
swear by the centrestand, too.
Frankly, I find the angle of lean on the ST more than
satisfactory, whereas on the Trophy I though it was shallower
(not very scientific, but I never measured either). My problems
all stem from kinetic situations where the bike is subject to
tossing and rolling on ferries or else interference from another
third party.
I've had the tarmac-impaling problem with the Trophy, which was
very heavy and would sink anything up to 4" on a hot day.
Rather embarrassing when you start her up on friends' new
asphalt drives!

I think it boils down to the weight of the bike and hence the
pressure on the sidestand.
For most bikes in the touring range, it's going to be more than
adequate to keep her steady.
I bow to your superior knowledge of quantum physics and admit to
having no theoretical knowledge to back this up, just many years
of often painful experience with ferries and other
non-conventional situations.

Although you are probably right in saying that:

same amount of

it to tip

this is only really relevant in the case of a child or vandal
trying to push it over.
As soon as you get another vehicle in the picture, like the
transit van that inadvertently nudged mine over while I was in a
pub, the difference is negligible, given the brute force of any
4-wheeled vehicle, and so the point is not so much the effort
involved to tip her over as the resistance offered by the
contact with the ground, and in the case of the sidestand this
is obviously much more resistant.
