Well, as others have said, take the MSF course.
FWIW, my first drop was not on my first bike. I waited until I had spent a
lot of money and invested in a bike and could do some real damage $$wise :-(
The problem with larger bikes as a first bike is that you can get yourself
in trouble with much less a twist of the wrist than you can on a smaller
bike. But a lot of that has to do with riding intelligently and I would
hope at your age that you would handle the learning experience more
responsibly than say a 19 year old hopping on the ST and wringing it for
all its worth in an attempt to set new land speed records.......
The ST is well balanced and while it is not outstanding at low speeds, it
is still very good. This last weekend in the keys, I was the only one in
our group that was handling U-turns on 1.5 lane roads with no feet down.
Take the course and see how you feel. Regardless of how many emails you
get one way or another, you will be the only person that can make the
decision on how comfortable you feel on a bike and that should be the one
thing that drives your decision.
Keep us updated on your progress.
