Re: Simple question from a simple guy



Leave the belly pans on.  You will need a 'socket' for the oil filter.... I forget what size, but I think it can be found on Eric's site, along with what size 'Allen' is needed for the plug.  Drain pan: just find one that is low enough, yet will hold four quarts.  Some people say to not have the engine warm when draining the oil, as the cool outside air may 'shock' the warm engine internals... but this is your decision.  On the other side of the coin, warm oil will drain more thoroughly in less time. Get a new crush washer for the drain plug.  They are cheap, and worth the added peace of mind.  As always, pre-fill the filter and lubricate the gasket before installing.  If you buy the 'jug' of Triumph oil, do not worry about leveling the bike exactly in fear of overfilling.  Dump the whole thing in!!!!!  Also, using plastic bags as gloves will keep the hands clean.   Lubrication of side stand?  Well, If you are there, you might as well do it.  Also lubricate your foot levers and associated linkages.

Any tips for doing an oil change at home? Not on type of oil (for the love
of all things sacred), but more along the lines of how the heck does a drain
pan fit under this beast? Does one have to remove the belly panel? Are there
any other maintenance issues I should take care of at the same time, eg
lubing the kickstand pivot or other minor issues that are best done at home
(where the labor is free).
