Well, I'm baffled by that.  I checked mine again last night.  The bike has
never been dropped (yet - touching wood etc.), the fairing is standard and
the dip/main beam switch definitely hits the fairing on full right lock,
just enough to push the screen up a couple of mm.  The first dealer I asked
in Germany told me that the risers weren't allowed here as they restricted
steering travel.

So what's different between EU and US bikes?
- - are the dip/main beam switches different?  I found a photo on the heated
grips page which looks like Eric's left bar (red & blue tank paint job) and
they seem to be just the same.  I know my switch cluster is the same as
other STs in Germany!

- - is the front fork setup different - e.g. EU models have the fork further
up in the triple clamp?  But that would make EU models steer slower,
wouldn't it?  Anyone in the US care to measure their front forks and post
the result?

What else could it be?  Surely I'm not a lone voice raving in the
wilderness???
