oil ratings SJ, SH etc.

Look VERY, VERY carefully on the API (American Petroleum Institute) circle
usually found on the back of an oil container. Inside that circle will be
the ratings such as SJ SH etc. If the friction enhancing modifiers have
been added that help cars get better gas mileage but are bad for motorcyle
wet clutches then the term "energy conserving" will be listed there also.
If that particular additive package IS NOT present that part of the circle
will be blank.

Oil can have the SJ (or any rating) and not have the friction modifiers. Not
all SJ rated oils have these particular additives. The rating does not
indicate whether or not the additive package is present!! This further
helps confuse consumers!

The API develops this wording and it is used as an industry standard by the
petroleum market. I work for an oil company so I am used to this little
system they devised.
