for Thomas- lubricate the chain without a centrestand?

A couple of the easier ways:

    1) attach a tie-down strap to a footpeg (or frame brace, anything
solid) and to something solid above the bike, or across the seat to
something on the other side (trees are commomly used by dirt riders
fixing flats). If you have a piece of wood or something to put under the
sidestand it helps but it's not a neccessity. Stand on the right side of
the bike with the sidestand down (roll the bike to get the wood block
under the sidestand, if you're using one). Push the bike over onto the
sidestand until the rear wheel is off the ground and tighten the
tie-down strap. Oil 'till your hearts content!

    2) for bigger jobs: place a block at least 2 inches thick under the
side stand as described above, have a milk crate or other strong support
ready on the right side of the bike and when you push the bike over onto
the sidestand, use your foot to push the crate/support under the frame
at a point where the desired wheel will be off the ground (it's best to
have one wheel on the ground for stability while working on the bike.
Lower the bike onto the crate and go to work removing the wheel or
adjusting your chain or whatever.

Be sure to fall under it so you don't
scratch it;
