Erik,
Both fork legs functioning as a single unit is very much dependant on the
ridgidity of the fork assembly. Not just the ridgidity of the individual
forklegs and stanchions but also the components connecting them, ie: the
Axle, mudguard and triple trees (Yokes).
I'd accept the 'works as a single unit' argument for a top notch Marzocchi
or Ohlins front end but I'm sceptical about applying the same logic to our
budget ST front end. Afterall a competition spec Ohlins front suspension
assembly costs more than my entire ST did new. (IR£12K, I called, I heard,
I faltered!)
If one runs 5wt in one leg and 10wt in the second leg, could one not simply
run an intermediate weight oil in both legs? This is probably a dumb
question but can the oils be safely blended?
Martin

Well that's what I thought at first but we forget that the front
forks don't work as a pair they work as a single unit. So having
different weight oils in different forks changes the overall rebound
damping of the forks as a unit.
