Glad to hear that you're mostly back in shape.

Don't feel too much like you're alone Lex - I know at least one other person that
did the same thing to his new ST.  Don't ask me how I know. :-(  My lock is a
bright orange so you can't forget it, but it blends into the red ST when you're
coming at the bike from the back.  I suppose this is an arguement to buy the
slower black or blue versions. :-)

In my case I scratched the fairing, bent the shift lever, and broke the gearshift
linkage.  I'm still working on the fairing ($363 at Cal BMW to replace so I'm
going to try to fix it first) but I re-bent the shift lever and replaced the
gearshift linkage.  The linkage is easy to break (I could see it going in a simple
parking lot tipover) so I took the old one, rethreaded further down on the rod,
and now I have it as a spare just in case.  BTW, the rod has both LH and RH
threads, so make sure you break the right end off. :-)

PS.  To avoid this in the future, the best ideas seem to be:
 - lock the rotor such that when you try to move your bike it immediately stops
 - put something in your ignition to remind you
 - use a dual key holder to remind you
 - rely on your theft insurance (my current plan)

PPS.  The shift lever is $85 !!!!!!   Fortunately, it is relatively soft and will
rebend.  I used two pieces of wood in my vise with another piece of wood (a 4x4)
to move it.  The wood left zero marks on the metal, so the shift lever looks
absolutely pristine and conforms to the old shape.
