to a higher pitched whine and that's all I get when I crank it now. At first
sounded almost as though the starting pinion gear wasn't hitting the flywheel
gear, but I doub't that is it. It is cranking. So does this sound like the
fule sender to anybody? Other ideas?

Try charging the battery-if that doesn't do it get a jump start, preferably
from another bike, or a car with the engine stopped and the headlights on,
and ride your bike down to the battery shop.
