As others have said, this is normal operation for your part of the
world; see the archives at <http://www.triumphnet.com/st/archive>, or
seach 'em at <http://www.seaotter.com/searchst.html>.

I haven't heard of Triumph actively recommending against folks using a
Scottoiler; I think that they just aren't giving their official stamp of
approval for it, just like any other non-Triumph accessory. I and
several others on the list have installed Scottoilers on our bikes and I
haven't heard of any problems or complaints. (However, make sure you
route the vaccum pickup clear of the throttle linkages -- I didn't, and
the pickup jammed the throttles wide open. Fortunately no real harm came
of it, but it was a scary lesson none the less!)

Good qualifier! :-) You can try some gel pads (see
<http://www.jcwhitney.com/product.jhtml?CATID=63476> for an example)
that are cheap and might be enough for the occasional use. However, if
your wife's going to do a lot of riding with you, you may want to invest
in a custom seat. Both Corbin and Sargent can make a new seat for you;
again, there's been a lot of discussion on the list about both seats
before, so check out the archive for the pro's and con's of each.
