My original chain lasted 6,000 miles, possibly due to the bike being
an ex-demonstrator. The replacement has about 14,000 miles on it and is
still going strong (touch wood). It's a DID X-Ring, as recommended by
Jack Lilley.

For the first 13,000 miles of its life it was lubricated by hand
whenever I remembered; since then I've had a Scottoiler fitted :-)
