I believe that gasoline should be more expensive in order to encourage
conservation. The American culture of, "it's two blocks away; I'll
drive" is utterly ridiculous. Hell, I'm guilty of it myself... my
office is a mile and a quarter from my house, and there's a bus line
that runs almost exactly between the two. Nontheless, I ride the bike
or (gasp!) drive my car almost every day, rather than taking the bus
or walking.
If gas cost twice as much as it does now, we'd have a lot fewer SUVs
on the road, and a lot more small cars that get 40+ MPG. That seems
like a good thing to me.
