Steve,
I have a chainTec fitted and it works perfectly. I originally had it
fitted to my TL1000S and switched it to the ST when I took delivery so
it's nearly three years old now.
The unit doesn't use the bike motion to pump the oil, it simply uses
the inertia to open or close a valve, just like the scottoiler uses
the engine vacuum. The secret is to mount the inertia sensor parallel
to the ground under riding conditions, otherwise the inertia of the
bike has to exceed the force exerted on the switch by gravity.(I think
it's just a large ball bearing running in a slot. You accelerate and
the bearing moves to the rear of the slot opening the oilway. When you
decellerate the bearing moves forward and shuts off the flow.)
I've seen plenty of ChainTecs that people have stopped using because
they don't work. In each case they were installed incorrectly and a
simple relocation of the inertia sensor had the units functioning
perfectly again. They are really easy to install (takes about 30
mins), are completely independant of the bikes other systems and on
the ST are practically invisable. I have images I can post if anyone
is interested.
On the other hand they're not as easily regulated or as sturdy as the
Scottoiler which is certainly a superior product.

First of all I tried a "Chaintec" unit which was supposed to work by
pumping oil as a result of the movement of the bike. Didn't work so
don't both even trying it.
