Mine came off without any force - there was no need to pry at it. The ring 
on the speedo drive should be smooth with two cut outs that match the drive 
tongues on the front wheel.

Has your speedo been working ok ? I am only guessing here, but maybe when 
it was installed, the tongues were not placed in the cut outs ? When I 
replaced my wheel, I had to rotate it so that they aligned before sliding 
it back into position.

I have no clue on the spring. Was it on the speedo drive ?
