Before I gave up on them I was wearing fairly smooth-soled boots with
a smooth leather upper. I think that the rubber is simply a too-soft
variety. The same boots caused nearly no wear on the shifter rubber on
my Honda Magna, and the peg rubber lasted easily four times as long.
