Re: brake lever excessive travel



My experience:

Last year, I complained of a "soft" lever when activating the front brakes.  The dealer in Kelowna, B.C. bled the brakes for me, N/C.  The lever stiffened up a little bit and I thought that was the way the brakes were.  Then, this year, the lever is still spongy and I am thinking that this can't be right.  I mention it to another 'STer' (Bryce) and he says "get Patrick to bleed them for you".  Patrick is one of the Triumph mechanics at Echo Cycle in Edmonton.  Bryce told me he had a soft lever and had one of the other mechanics bleed the brakes but the lever was still spongy.  After Patrick bled his brakes they were unreal.  So, I thought, what the heck.  I was getting some other work done and had this added to the order with the stipulation that Patrick do the brake bleed.  Finally, I get my bike back and leave the dealer, nearly putting myself over the handlebars (no kidding) when I put the front brake on.  Not because I applied it with much force, just the fact that now it moves only about 1/2" before the brakes are on.  And I mean "ON"!  Prior to this the lever was moving at least 50% of the way to the handlebar before the brakes were coming on.  So, I'd say you guys have air in your system.

p.s.  I use position '4' on the adjuster.  I don't want to be reaching too far for that lever when I need it.  Previously, I was using position '2' because of the excessive lever travel.
