Fuel leak....

Greetings,

Had I written this before last Saturday morning, I would have had
nothing but praise for my '00 ST. At that time it had not exhibited
any of the problems that seem to inflict others on the list. The transmission
shifted very smoothly from day one and even !better! after the first
oil change. The fuel gauge has always indicated full until about
110 - 120 miles and then descends, reaching the beginning of the
red zone at about 210 miles. The low fuel indicator light comes on
at about 4.7 gals consumed leaving 0.8 gals, equal to the claimed
reserve quantity. The front brakes are assume and the back brake
works without any wooden or dead feel. The bike handles wonderfully.
My dealer, BMW-Triumph of Santa Cruz County delivered a wonderful
example of what Hinkley can produce. God had truly blessed me, or
so I thought....

But, and this is a BIG but, I am writing this Monday afternoon....

Saturday morning, after my first round trip commute to work and back
last Friday (~120 miles), I was going to participate in my first shop ride
with some Honda folks on Saturday and my Triumph dealer's shop ride
on Sunday. But entering the garage early Saturday morning greeted me
with the fragrance of MTBE-poisoned gasoline (others from CA will
understand).

Sure enough, investigation revealed a sheen of gas on wires behind the
alternator, but no puddle below the bike. By Sunday morning there was
discoloration (but, again, no puddle) on the concrete floor just in front of
the side stand and the telltale remains of gas "tracks" at the rear of the
left belly pan.

Crap.

A call to the dealer first thing Tuesday will hopefully begin a very short
journey to this problem's resolution and elimination of future reoccurrence.
