sprocket and chain wear

Just had my new tyres fitted this week - good job too, with the Thames
flooding its banks now, though those Pirellis sure are slithery with mould
release all over the show for the first 20 miles! Apparently, the fitter has
seen two bikers go down even before they left the forecourt, so BEWARE!
So far, so good though - have to say I like the grip and the handling, and
I've only done 20 miles on them to date.
So Jonathan and Eric - hat's off.
Incidentally, at 8,500 miles, the mechanic noted on my invoice that I should
reckon on having sprocket and chain looked at (i.e. replaced, presumably)
before the next big service at 12 k.
Does the panel think this is normal? On other bikes I would have expected a
bit more wear and tear, to be honest.
Perhaps it's all the stopping and starting in London driving.

Tim
