Hi Paul,
I'm not privy to any much inside info but here's a couple of things. The
triple configuration was launched by BSA as the Rocket III in the late '60's
to compete with the Japenese 4 cyl invasion. It was adopted by Triumph when
the companies semi-merged in '70. Triumph brought 3 of the 3 cyl to Daytona
I believe in '67. The triple configuration of today's Triumph comes from
that lineage.
