The lowest my mileage ever went without a fuel leak was ~35 MPG (US),
but I had been running at ~100MPH into a very stiff headwind for about
an hour and a half at the time [heading home from Palm Springs]. With
43,000 miles on it, I'm still getting 41-43 MPG out of just about
every tankfull. Runs strong, doesn't burn much oil (about a quart
inbetween changes), and is sporting a freshly-applied new paint job to
boot (I'll post a picture as soon as I find a digital camera). If you
are getting much less than 40 MPG with the stock pipe/tune, then I'd
start looking for more fuel leaks and/or have the CO level set.

My original sender never did have a clue. The replacement (potentially
leaky) one worked just fine, as does the now-current sender. Just be
sure to give it a couple of minutes to register a change in fuel
level. Motorcycles do tend to lean this way and that from time to
time, so the action of the gauge is (by design) quite slow.
