Have a close look at the alternator, which is on the left side in the
vicinity of where the fuel sender sits. When my sender leaked I only saw a
small puddle of gas on the garage floor on a couple of occasions. I could
smell the gas in the garage for a week or so before I clued in that I had
'the problem'. What confirmed it for me was the drop of gas that I often
found hanging from the bottom edge of the alternator (trickle down). Most
of the time the gas was evaporating before it had a chance to drip on the
floor. If you can smell it while you are riding I'd be a little worried
about bursting into flames! Even if you don't have a fuel sender problem
you should find out where the leak is.

dropped significantly, to 35mpg. Before I was getting to 180 miles before
hitting the fuel light, now hitting it at 130. Is this a plausible level
for city riding, or do I have a fuel leak? I've suspected the latter
because I've conspiciously smelled gas a couple of times while stopped on
the bike (red light/stop sign), but never seen any puddles below the bike,
and I've looked. Never had the fuel sender replaced, though it was a bit
wild when I first got the bike. (Better now, strangely.)
