There was a big brouhaha about valves a while back; check the archives.
Eric Sheley was keeping a record of valve clearances for those who opted
to check the valves at 6K, and for those who chose to wait until the
official service interval of 12K. I can't recall any concrete evidence
that would recommend checking the valves at 6K, but Eric can probably
answer better than I (once he quits living the Playboy lifestyle :-).
