The number printed on the tire is the maximum, which is rarely the ideal.
When I was racing I went by the 10% rule mentioned earlier, but on the
street I tend to find a value for a particular tire and stick with it. As
long as you're not exceeding the max, and don't have it way too
underinflated (probably more than 10 lbs under max) then I would recommend
using what feels best to you. Your weight, your roads, your suspension
setup, and your riding style are all going to affect it, so anyone's
recommendations should only be used as a starting point.
