Engine cutting out

I was approaching a tight roundabout this evening and I blipped the
throttle to aid shifting down into first and this had the effect of causing
the engine to cut out. It started again as soon as I hit the start button.
It could have been a nasty situation, but there were no cars behind and I
was not into the turn yet.

A little earlier in the ride the engine seemed to loose power doing the
same thing but did not cut out and recovered.

Am I wrong to blip the throttle a little before changing down? If I don't
it can be quite grindy getting to a low gear in a hurry.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem? Hopefully this is a one off
as I am taking the bike to France for a couple of weeks soon and
don't want this happening - driving on the right hand side of the road will
be enough to cope with.
