[ST] Mountain weather in early Fall? (western U.S.A.)

Some circumstances have caused me to postpone my ride from Detroit to
California.  I had originally planned to leave this week.  Now I'm wondering
how long I can postpone the trip before the weather turns in the mountain
states.  I was going to head west through the northern states, crossing
mountains in Montana, Idaho, and Washington.  Then go south through
Washington, Oregon, and California.  My eastern journey would take me
through southern Utah and southwest Colorado.

Feedback from ST listers in these states would be much appreciated.  Would
early to mid-October be too risky weather-wise?  Reply off-list, as this
probably doesn't the general ST community.  Thanks.
