[ST] GPS error question

When traveling in map mode on a III+, there is a circle around your current
location. I understand that this circle somehow represents the calculated
positional error. What I don't understand in the relationship between this
circle and the EPE (estimated position error) that is displayed on the
satellite page.

The displayed EPE is usually around 15-20 ft., but goes as high as 50 or
more. The circle on the map page, however, is usually several hundred feet
in diameter. Unfortunately, the manual does not even mention the circle.
Does anyone know how to read it?
