RE: [ST] GPS error question (accuracy circle)



Yeah, sometime in 2000 our nice government decided that the civilians aren't
really all that dangerous and we don't all have medium to long range
missiles in our back yards. As such, all false errors were eliminated last
year. This is why I'm confused as to why the error circle is so large.

It had been my understanding that civilian GPS was, until recently, held to
much looser error rates than military spec. So your 500Ft error ring could
be correct. Very recently the Goobermint decided to allow military spec to
be available to all GPS system in the US.

So the civilian error rate went from something like -/+200 yards error
to      -/+2 yards of error.

Pretty darn good, eh?
