[ST] low fuel light

Does anyone know what triggers the low fuel light to activate?Is there a 
sender unit in the tank or is it tied to the fuel gauge?I filled up yesterday 
morning and after riding about 110 miles the gauge read empty and the low 
fuel light came on.I thought maybe I didn't fill the tank, but it only took 
about 2.5 gallons.Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks
