If it's any help the first time I fitted my top-box I had the bike on the
centre-stand and had to get someone else to hold the front of the bike down as
it was rocking back on the stand 'cos so much force was required to seat the
box on the rack.  After that I always fit the top-box whilst the bike is on the
side-stand, in gear, and, like the man said, the suspension does compress a
bit.  A bit of brute force and ignorance was then required to smack the slide
back so that it could be locked.

You could try lubricating the front and back of the rack and the rubber stops
with a little bit of 'Fairy Liquid' (washing up liquid) and you may find it a
tad easier.
