Sorry for the late response - I've had a busy month.

Wire EDM *does* eat up the wire. Rather quickly, too. To keep that
from becoming a problem, the wire is fed off of a spool, through the
cut, and then out the back of the machine into a bin so it can be
recycled. Even with careful control of the wire tension, current, and
wire feed rate, the wires often break. For that reason, wire EDM
machines also incorporate automatic re-threading mechanisms as well as
using a water jet to keep the wire cool and centered.
