Re: [ST] RE: In My Head

Here is my take on this unsprung weight issue. I think we all would feel
the difference with a lighter swing arm than what we have now. Not so much
from the stand point of handling, but from quality of ride. Based on a lot
of the discussion on this list about the difference an Ohlin rear shock
makes for quality of ride, supports my view on this. Common theory says the
springs do not hold up the vehicle, rather they hold the tire down on the
ground during the course of travel. The more the sprung weight the more
difficult it is for the springs to return the wheel to the ground. With this
said, it stands to reason that less unsprung weight will result in our
springs and shocks doing a better job of controlling the wheel hop and give
a better quality ride. I don't know how much difference the weight is
between our single side swing arm and a state of the art two sided swing
arm, but if it is significant, I think we would feel the difference.
