Yup. When I was in the Navy we used to change the oil in the large
diesels based entirely on the results of spectrographic analysis.
Routine filter changes were common (our filters had differential
pressure gauges), but oil changes only happened once in a blue moon.

Gasoline engines run a lot cleaner and significantly cooler than
diesels.
