Replacement shocks

As a few people have sought my opinions following the article I posted to
the unofficial site's FAQ -> Suspension page, I thought I'd offer my two
penn'orth (we Anglos call $.02) on the subject of the relative merits of
different replacement shocks.
I chose the Ohlins rear shock for the following reasons:
1) The standard shock was not capable of providing what I was asking.
2) Even if the standard shock could have been overhauled, I doubt whether
the result would have come close to the performance of the branded products;
particularly because of the lack of compression damping adjustment.
3) As I don't do the work myself, the cost of rear shock overhaul vs. new
shock cost would have made the former poor value for money.
4) I ended up with an Ohlins shock because:
4.1) I went to an specialist who happened to be an Ohlins agent
4.2) Ohlins make a shock to fit
I would have been quite happy to have had a shock from Wolsky (WP), Penske
or Maxton if they had been available. I see these as being of equal
performance/quality as the Ohlins, and similar price range.
Regards,
